Balaam appears to refer to God as
my GOD. Whenever I've read this story, he's come across as a God-fearing man, whom God messes around,
telling him to do something, and then sending an angel to block his way. Is God really as tricksy as he is depicted here?

I find the story a bit confusing, but I think Balaam agreed to help Israel's enemy for payment. It seems he had agreed to curse the Israelite troops in God's name and that is why God stepped in and would only let him say what he allowed.
I find there are elements to this story which stretch my credulity: a talking donkey being one of them.
